My Rating: 🧡🧡🧡🧡🖤
Telling flashback stories is hard. I did it with one of my first novels, The Secret Life of Miel, and damn neared pulled all my hair out trying to make sure everything gelled correctly. I’ve mostly avoided doing it since.
It takes a special kind of author to not only make the flashbacks seem seamless and necessary but to keep them entertaining and unobtrusive to the narrative as well.
About an hour into this game, I realized just how badly Quantic Dream failed at this, which is why I only rated this game four hearts out of five. I was irritated because I liked the story, but the way it was being presented was… trash.
Turns out I’m not the only one that thought this way. In fact, on the PS4 version, they included a Remix option, which reorganizes the story in chronological order so you can play in a more sensible manner. I restarted the game using this option and loved it.
I think part of the reason I loved this game so much is that, as most of you know, I have a thing for the paranormal, and this game has it in spades. Also, I’ve always wanted to write a story about a character from childhood up, and this game allows you to play Jodie at nearly every stage of her life. It’s awesome. I’m also a big fan of games that allow you to play drastically different scenarios (fights, driving cars, exploration, etc.), and that is something this game absolutely excels at.
I can probably sum up how I feel about this game with the social media posts I released shortly after beating it:
@AlexaNichols69
“I just beat my first PS4 game, “Beyond Two Souls” by @Quantic_Dream. It had me crying like a baby towards the end — it’s a compelling psychological story with fantastic acting (Willem Dafoe and @EllenPage nailed their roles) laden with visual eye-candy and varying play styles. Loved, loved, loved it! ❤”
@Amanda_Fantasy
“Which route did you choose?! I’ve gotta know!”
@AlexaNichols69
Well. I…
· Saved Walter & Jimmy in the Homeless chapter,
· Didn’t save Paul in the Navajo chapter (because I didn’t know I could! 😭),
· Didn’t kill her mother Norah in her chapter,
· Saved Ryan & Cole during The Black Sun mindfuck.
I then chose Life and Ryan. 🤗
